Protection in the petrochemical industry

Accidents can occur in the petrochemical industry that can be prevented with the correct equipment.

The tasks carried out in the petrochemical industry are prone to a series of accidents caused by chemical substances and as a result of mechanical and thermal risks. For suitable protection against such accidents, adequate attention should be given to the wearing of safety gloves and protective clothing and footwear, among other forms of protection.

There is a wide range of gloves on the market to protect workers against risks of absorption of and skin contact with corrosive agents, sensitising agents and irritants. For this reason, it is important that both the material used and the features of the gloves are appropriate for the product being handled, with the need to choose the right level of protection for the agent or substance in use.

When choosing the right gloves, a series of factors need to be taken into account; the most important of these are the chemical substance being handled, the risks against which protection is given, the level of protection and, finally, although no less important, comfort and ergonomics.

In addition, protection also means that workers’ clothing should made from materials that protect against the specific risk they need to protect against, regardless of the other specifications it might have.

This means that each garment should have a level of protection that is suited to the risk. These risks are defined on a scale from 1 to 6 (from lower to higher levels) and express the time it takes a chemical substance to pass through the material of which the clothing is made.

Consequently, given that the appropriate material is available, it is important that workers are suitably protected in order to prevent possible accidents resulting from tasks carried out in the petrochemical industry.

It is compulsory for all protective equipment to be certified by an authorised entity, because personal protective equipment (PPE) can be found on the market that is offered with material test result instead of proof of certification. This type of action should be discouraged by being rejected.
