PPEs or personal protective equipment should be used according to standards when risks are unavoidable through the use of technical or collective protection. In particular, safety gloves against the cold are used when environmental conditions at work are really cold.

They are regulated by UNE-EN 14058:2004 (Protective clothing and garments for protection against cold environments) to protect against ambient temperatures above -5°C and by EN 342:2004/AC: 2008 (Protective clothing, outfits and garments for protection against the cold) designed to protect against ambient temperatures between -5°C and -50°C.

Gloves are regulated by the standard UNE EN 511:2006 (Protective gloves against the cold). This exposure to the cold may be due both to climatic conditions as well as industrial activity. The standard governing this protective equipment is UNE-EN 511:2006, which specifies test methods for gloves that protect against convective and conductive cold up to -50°C; these are the two forms of heat exchange.

According to this standard, gloves should be at least level 1 for abrasion and tear from the standard for gloves against mechanical hazards. Moreover, these regulations specify that the gloves must maintain their protection when wet. That is, they must thermally insulate hands to prevent cooling by heat transfer to the outside air.

Thus there are three criteria for classification:

1. Resistance to cold with 5 levels, from 0 to 4.

2. Resistance to cold by conduction or contact: 5 levels, from 0 to 4.

3. Waterproofing: Two levels, 0 and 1.

Gloves for the cold or low temperatures are typically made from two or more materials and the function of both of these are complementary. The exterior protects against mechanical hazards and inside the materials provide comfort and maintain body temperature steady. The exterior may be leather or acrylic fibres and the interior may be cotton or acrylic.

MAFEPE has developed a range of gloves to protect against all levels of cold, made from different materials in accordance with the area of the hand to protect and environmental conditions for which they are intended.
